Tehran urges UNSC to impose ‘severe sanctions’ against Israel
TEHRAN – Iran’s deputy foreign minister for political affairs has called on the UN Security Council to implement stringent sanctions against Israel based on Chapter 7 of the UN Charter.
Talking to Iranian media, Majid Takht Ravanchi highlighted Iran's consistent efforts to bring Israeli aggression to the attention of the UN Security Council, emphasizing that despite numerous notifications, the council has failed to take action.
“We believe it is the responsibility of the UN Security Council to impose strict sanctions on the Israeli regime under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter,” Takht Ravanchi stated.
He argued that the U.S. and some European countries are preventing the UN from fulfilling its responsibility for international peace and security by supporting Israel.
“We showed restraint for a significant period of time, but our restraint was misused by the Israeli regime, leading them to believe they can act without consequences,” he remarked.
The Iranian diplomat further asserted that Iran's recent retaliatory actions against Israeli military targets were conducted in line with Article 51 of the UN Charter.
“We have announced that our operation has concluded for now, and should they choose to initiate further hostilities, they will face severe repercussions,” Takht Ravanchi added.
On Tuesday, October 1, Iran retaliated against the Israeli assassination of Hamas political bureau chief, Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah secretary-general, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and IRGC Qods Force high-ranking commander, Brigadier General Abbas Nilforushan by launching approximately 200 ballistic missiles at Israeli military and intelligence installations across the occupied territories.
